Origin

The Fates started as a brand completely driven by women in 2024. The name comes from the Greek myth of the three goddesses Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. Clotho spins the thread of life, Lachesis measures it, and Atropos cuts it. These three women decide the fate of every human being and every god. Even the almighty Zeus cannot escape the destiny they have in mind for him.

Vision

The motivation behind starting The Fates as a brand is rooted in the position of women in today’s society. There is a deep longing among women to honour their true selves, to not be afraid to feel and show it, and to be a menace when needed, unapologetically.

Most of the inspiration comes from artisanal craftsmanship, myths, legends, and nature. All of these aspects have played a key role in women’s lives throughout history. Plato referred to myths as old wives’ tales: stories that old women tell young children. Women have long been seen as irrational, while rationality has been regarded as the highest goal. At The Fates, we advocate for the knowledge of the body, intuition, beauty, and the senses. These qualities have often been viewed as unimportant, and in many cases even as weaknesses. We see them as life-giving, and we want to inspire you to do the same.

Mission

At The Fates, we truly care about our products, the environment, and the people we dress. There is love, expertise, and tenderness in each garment. Everything is crafted in a small studio and/or produced in a woman-led factory in Slovakia. The fabrics are deadstock materials, and the durability of these materials is a major priority at The Fates, as well as their environmental impact. The patterns and first samples are made in-house, resulting in very little traffic between the factory and the studio.

The styles are easy to wear, long-lasting, detailed, and made to move in. Most of them do not require much ironing, because life is busy enough. There is a significant focus on the patterns, fabrics, and how they correspond with each other. Our products can be worn in multiple ways, and we take every age, body type, and weather condition into consideration. All of this is meant to give you the opportunity to be your whole self and move freely.

Reading this, you might wonder about one thing: why do we only work with women? There are two important reasons for this.

First, the feminine, which in the eyes of The Fates includes creativity, sensitivity, empathy, and community, has been suppressed for ages. Making space for it is a human necessity to keep our collective spirit healthy as a society.

Second, approximately 90% of fashion school graduates are women, while around 90% of the creative directors at the biggest fashion houses are men. At The Fates, we don’t believe this is due to a lack of talent among female graduates, but rather to sexist assumptions, such as women being underestimated or the possibility that they may have children. And let’s be honest: who is a better manager than a mother?

Much love,

The Fates
